The rural food heritage initiative

Nawaya celebrates and revives rural food heritage in Egypt, by building an initiative around artisanal food. Baladini (“balady” representing local traditions in Arabic and –“ini” meaning many small things in Italian), the rural educational kitchen of Nawaya, is being spun -off. Young women from rural areas are the champions of this initiative where 60 young female farmers are enabled to supply in bulk high-quality eggs and flour aimed at high-income markets.
In parallel with this, 100 women from rural areas will become chefs and have the opportunity to create artisanal products and recipes. Such products and services are promoted through different activities and yearly artisanal food fairs.
Nawaya remains one of Drosos Foundation’s venerable partners in Cairo and has become a vector for artisanal food innovation and clean agriculture in Egypt at large.
