Follow-up care – Sustainable educational and training measures

The transition from a children’s home or juvenile shelter to independence poses special challenges for teenagers and young adults and entails diverse risks in all areas of life.
Care leavers, the technical term used for those leaving such institutions, often lack the support that other young people receive from their parents in order to take that step to successfully lead an independent life. That is why voluntary, low-threshold support services are now being made available free of charge to care leavers who are unable to rely on any professional or state-funded support provided by qualified social workers.
The aim of these free services, which include telephone advice and personal coaching, is to ensure that the care leavers’ previous educational successes are sustained.
The project involves 14 institutions run by the partner organisation, from which up to 160 young adults leave each year.
