#GreenInitiativesCampaign: Inspiring Egyptian youth for environmental action

Fishermen are catching plastic and increase their income pressing and selling it to upcycling companies.

On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5th, DROSOS FOUNDATION launched the #GreenInitiativesCampaign, a public engagement campaign showcasing the work of five of our partners using green approaches to empower youth and their communities in Egypt.

The campaign aims to raise awareness among youth about environmental protection and inspire and encourage them to contribute with their ideas and actions. The following initiatives funded by DROSOS, all combining economic and social inclusion with environmental impact, are part of the campaign:

  • VeryNile: Community empowerment by cleaning the Nile from plastic and creating and selling upcycled products.
  • Kendaka: Improving women’s livelihoods by upcycling glass, plastic and textile waste to trendy products.
  • Cairo Bike: Accessible transportation enhancing micro-mobility and reducing CO2 emission.
  • Nawaya: Generating income opportunities for rural women and youth with eco-friendly and healthy agriculture practices and reviving local heritage recipes.
  • Rooftop farms: Changing unpleasant rooftops to herbal gardens and eating clean produce as well as earning extra income.

To ensure a wide outreach, DROSOS FOUNDATION engaged five Egyptian celebrities and public figures in the campaign: Yousra, Nour, Tara Emad, Mayan El Sayed, and Ahmed Magdy. Each of them visited a project and had a chance to interact with the participants. Their experience was captured in five short videos, which have been spread on Social Media under the hashtag #GreenInitiativesCampaign. The Social Media campaign includes different calls to action directly linked to the projects. For example, Kendaka, is calling on youth to participate in the campaign by sharing what they’ve been upcycling recently and winning a hands-on upcycling experience at one of their workshops.
