Safi Crafts empowering women in the Jordan Valley

The local Ghor Al-Safi Women’s Association based in the southern Jordan Valley is transforming Safi Crafts, its local handicraft workshop, into a small profitable enterprise that operates on a nationwide basis. The women cultivate indigo, extract the dye and use it along with other natural dyes in the production of their own high-quality textiles, or for products made to order. The goods are available in stores in Jordan. An initial project with UNESCO between 2013 and 2016 laid the foundation for the growth and success of Safi Crafts by increasing the quality of the products, introducing the use of indigo and training the women to become entrepreneurs. The current project provides further support for the expansion of Safi Crafts and thereby also contributes to the economic and socio-cultural development of the rural community of Ghor Al-Safi.
