Sustainable Livelihoods through Music Education

The overall goal of the project is to enable youth to engage productively in the music industry thereby widening their future base for income generation and preventing them from working in exploitative or low-pay professions that limit their development.

DAR, the House of Arts and Culture, is an Egyptian organization that is committed to qualifying youth in music, enabling them to access opportunities in the tourism, entertainment and cultural sectors. Through this project, 200 young men and women from Darb El Ahmar district of Historic old Cairo and from Aswan City acquire professional music training and are supported to engage in professional opportunities to generate direct income. A further 60 are trained in sound engineering or as sound technicians. In parallel, two music ensembles are created to serve the cultural, tourism and entertainment sectors, providing practical experience and direct income to students in the final stages of training. The ensembles are one of several ways in which the project supports the partner in enhancing the sustainability of its programming.

DAR provides opportunities for youth to exchange with peers in the region through their existing relations with two DROSOS-supported partners in Jordan and Lebanon.
