This project builds on Al Khalifa Crafts and Design, a successful earlier project during which Built Environment Collective (BEC) implemented the Athar Lina Heritage Design Thinking School in Al Khalifa, a neighbourhood with important cultural heritage in Cairo. During this project phase, the partner is strengthening a multi-track employability and skills development program in heritage industries with increased opportunities for income generation and self-employment for women and youth from al-Khalifa specifically and Historic Cairo in general. The project capitalizes on the opportunities heritage industries hold (handicrafts, storytelling, tours among others) to work towards income generation and job market integration for young people while in parallel upscaling the Athar Lina line of handcrafted products. Another goal consists in having a scalable and partially sustainable model of heritage management for socioeconomic development in Historic Cairo by the end of the project.
