The project Green South addresses two important challenges in Jordan: the growing amounts of all types of solid waste not being recycled; and the very high unemployment rates, especially among youth, refugees and women. In the south of Jordan, economic participation is particularly low and unemployment as well as the poverty rate are high.
Through a community-based approach, the project assesses interest and needed incentives in the governorates of Ma’an and Aqaba for advancing innovative circular economy business models in the solid waste management sector. Based on the results of the assessment, it provides tailored education and capacity development support to women and men who are interested in opening micro-businesses focused on recycling and upcycling. The project also creates awareness in the community and among business owners about the opportunity of creating value out of recycling and upcycling solid waste and trains four community-based organisations and two municipalities in providing business-relevant support services to micro-businesses.
DROSOS FOUNDATION has successfully partnered with FPEC in a previous project and supports them with their organisational development, namely in the areas of strategic planning, fundraising as well as monitoring and evaluation.
