Dialogue in the Dark

Dialogue in the dark is a social enterprise that provides the interested public with simulations of the real-life experiences of people with visual impairments. Led by 20 visually impaired guides, the simulation tour takes visitors on a journey across streets or through busy markets and public parks – all in in complete darkness.
The individuals that take part in the tour undergo a personal transformation that nurtures empathy, understanding and tolerance towards those with disabilities. Moreover, the project provides life skills training on topics including leadership and communication for around 150 visually impaired youth, thereby facilitating their economic opportunities.
The social enterprise is based on a model that has been implemented in around 40 locations across the world, and now for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa. So far, an estimated 120,000 individuals to date have experienced what it means to live in the dark. The local partner, Al Nour Wal Amal (Arabic for ‘Light and hope’), implements this model with support from the international not-for-profit partner, Dialogue Social Enterprise.
