At the intersection between life and death, in the Qaitbey neighbourhood in the «Desert of the Mamluks» in Cairo is a cemetery where the Sultan al-Ashraf Qaitbey created a complex of buildings around his tomb that are masterpieces of Islamic art. Sultan Foundation works with the underprivileged and stigmatised community of this neighbourhood to enhance their economic prospects and livelihoods. The journey continues to promote the traditional crafts of the neighbourhood specifically through the creation of a crafts centre that improves the economic opportunities of local women by supporting «Mishka» – a local jewellery and leather brand – and advances cultural and heritage tourism. The ultimate aim is to make the area a better place to live and a more attractive place to visit, while safeguarding humanity’s shared heritage.
