Moving stories – Promoting literacy and writing skills

Reading is a basic educational skill and is crucial for learning success. However, children and young people, especially boys, are increasingly underperforming in this area. The ‘Colourful Stories’ project provides students at the middle and senior secondary school levels with better access to reading, which helps them to perform better at school and become more motivated about their education.
Between 2013 and 2015 a comprehensive range of services geared specifically towards the needs of boys was developed during an earlier project entitled ‘Colourful Stories – Promoting Literacy and Learning for Boys’, in collaboration with the network Schulische Bubenarbeit. The project offered various activity-orientated educational measures that were successfully implemented in schools.
The follow-up project ‘Colourful Stories – Literacy for Life’ will continue to provide the existing services until 2019. The educational measures will be specifically adapted to the needs of the schools, supplemented with additional modules such as issues affecting girls, the promotion of writing skills, as well as special topics like bullying or addiction. In order to the secure the ongoing provision of services, the project will be financed through income from schools, the sale of services and fundraising.
