Young people moving out of institutional homes face multiple challenges, particularly if after-care services are limited and where there is high social stigma. Wataneya, a leading local partner, aims to support the transition to independence of 500 care leavers by equipping them with a variety of life skills and by connecting them with potential income-generating opportunities. Thereby, the care leavers themselves become part of the change by taking a lead in the planning of their future and through their participation in system level-changes. Building on Wataneya’s success in ensuring that quality standards for care institutions are nationally endorsed, appropriate standards, policies and procedures will be developed for after-care services nationwide. By forging partnerships with multiple stakeholders, including civil society, government and the private sector, Wataneya aims to work with care leavers to create sustained changes.
